I watched as he stared off, not knowing anyone was there. His chest tightened and I could see the heart beat against his ribs; slow at first then it quickened. His fists clenched as he bit his trembling lip, hiding even from himself the sorrow. Lifeless eyes continued gazing, but they now let go what was being held back. It was then that I noticed something small in one fist, red. A trinket from someone he had lost perhaps. He fell to his knees, it was sudden, yet expected. As his shoulders moved with each subtle cry, he started to dig in the earth. I had realized I was wrong, it wasn’t a gift received, but a red bracelet intended to be given. Intended, but missed. As he placed it in the dirt and pushed the soil over I felt a tear fall down my cheek; I had witnessed his last goodbye…
